Let’s Get Organizing!
Today we are tackling books.
- Grab your materials – donation box, notepad/pen to add books you want to read to your reading list, and dusting cloth
- Set your timer for 10 Minutes
- Go!
We understand that this can be harder for some, than it is for others. Instead of thinking of this as 10 minutes to get rid of books, think of this as 10 minutes to arrange your bookshelves. If you happen to find books that you are done with, you can place them in your donation box.
Possible ways to use these 10 minutes
- Focus on one or two shelves to organize and arrange. Look for a stuffed shelf and start with that one. You only have to organize for 10 minutes, so keep it small.
- Scan your bookshelves to find books you are ready to donate – kids books might be an easy place to start.
The question to ask yourself:
Am I going to read or refer to this book again?
As I was sorting through my books, I automatically started asking myself, “Do I like this book?” And really the answer again and again was, “yes.” I wouldn’t have the book on my bookshelf if I didn’t like it.
The heart of the matter is, do you want to “keep this book?”
- If you have read it, are you going to read it again?
- If you haven’t read it yet, are you going to make time to read it?
- If you’ve started it, are you really going to finish it?
Find your Inner Bookshelf Stylist
A great way to find motivation is to use inspiration pictures of bookshelves you love to give your own shelves an overhaul. Notice what all of your favorites images have in common and work on replicating that look in your own bookshelves.
One thing most beautifully styled bookshelves have in common is breathing room on the shelf– it’s never overstuffed. How many books can keep on your shelves while still allowing back shelf space to show through.
If you’re feeling unsure about whether to get rid of a book, remember, you can always check it out from the library if you really get an itch to read it. Apps like Goodreads are great ways to catalog your to-read list for future reference.
We did it!
I spent a longer than 10 minutes today because I organized the books on my bedside table and in our hall bookshelves.
