Finding Time to Parent
We first got to know Julie Morgenstern through her appearances on The Oprah show but fell in love with her approach to organizing through her many books.
Julie is a best-selling author whose titles include Organizing from the Inside Out, Time Management from the Inside Out, SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life, and Organizing from the Inside Out for Teens.
In Julie’s latest book, Time to Parent, she lays out an instruction manual that offers achievable methods for containing and organizing the seemingly endless job of parenting.
Julie has a natural ability to make even the most complicated subjects (parenting, self-care) seem manageable and joyful. She encourages us to stop seeking “balance” and instead seek boundaries.
We touched on:
- How to Organize your time as a parent, whether you are a working or stay-at-home, using a new framework.
- The 2 parts of parenting: Raising a Human Being and Being a Human Being, and each part can be divided into 4 Quadrants.
- In order to Raise a Human you have to do your P.A.R.T. – Provide, Arrange, Relate, Teach, which covers the four primary responsibilities of raising a human.
- Delegating household duties – Put Your Cards On The Table: This is a great trick moms can do to help with delegating household duties so work is more evenly distributed and not all of the cards are in front of mom.
- How to help your kids and teens who always forget things and as a parent you feel like you need to take over.
- How to parent through perfectionism through the Max/Mod/Min Strategy.
- Resisting the siren call of technology this summer through synchronizing screen time and making technology the 5th choice and not always the 1st choice.
- How to Be a Human while raising kids through the acronym S.E.L.F. – Sleep, Exercise, Love, and Fun.
- Finding the time for S.E.L.F. and getting past guilt when you focus on being on human.
- Julie’s experience organizing The Oprah Show archives.
