5 Tips to Tackle your Project
Based on our own experiences, the best thing to do when you are feeling overwhelmed is to call a friend or spouse! Not only can another person give you a different perspective, but when you start hearing your concerns spoken aloud, tasks and solutions can become clearer.
Now break out that pad of paper and your calendar, and let’s make a plan!
1. Write a To-do List
As you are sharing your project with a friend, take a minute to write out your to-dos as you are thinking of them. Don’t be too concerned about the order of tasks, we’ll get to that next, this is just a braindump.
2. Prioritize Your Tasks
Once you have written out your to-do list, go back through your list and pick out the top 3-5 tasks to do first.
If you listed larger, overarching tasks, don’t forget to break it down into doable steps. For example, instead of writing a general task like “clean room” write a more specific task like “put away clean clothes.”
3. Plan out the next 5-7 days with your calendar
Based on your priorities from the previous step, plan out the next week. Be sure to write your tasks on your calendar and be realistic about how much time you actually have to work on your project based on your other responsibilities.
4. Conquer any quick tasks now
If you have any tasks that will take 2 minutes or less, do them now. A quick phone call or a looking up something online can take just a minute or two but can move your project along more than you realize.
Also, this a pivotal step because it can be so easy to get stuck on the small details that don’t matter too much. Find those quick tasks and be intentional about not spending too much time on them.
5. Delegate
We know this isn’t always possible, but delegate if you can. For example, if you are moving, make a list of tasks that other people can do. You don’t even have to know who specifically is going to do it yet but if anyone offers to help, you have a list you can refer to.
Delegating can also be as simple as shopping online to eliminate errands, or hiring extra help with cleaning or babysitting.
Bonus: Plan Backwards
Do you have a deadline on a project? What do you need to have done 1 day before the deadline? What do you need to have done 1 week before the deadline?
Planning backwards allows you to see tasks you might have missed before.
