Celebrating new systems along with the setbacks
Sometime new systems don’t quite work out the way you intend. On Instagram, @AtoBpodcast, Bethany shared her frustrating hunt for her missing umbrella. She eventually found it tucked away in her rain boots, patiently wait for its next use.
Haven’t we all been there? We try to prepare and then can’t remember where we so carefully put an item!
I’m here to say to Bethany, and to us all, it is an organizing win…that you are still adjusting to. Just because there is one small hiccup in the beginning doesn’t mean it is a fail, only that more time is need to get use to the system.
This goes with any new thing you are learning, it takes time! Think of the way we teach kids new concepts: practice, practice, practice with tons of encouragement sprinkled on top.
Then for some reason, as adults we believe we are suppose to get it the first time! And then when we don’t, we mental beat ourselves up or explain away why we aren’t the type of person that does “x.” Why?
Whatever it is you are working on, whether it is getting organized, eating healthier, exercising, trying to get more sleep, whatever, speak to yourself as you would to a child who is learning something new with lots of encouragement and grace for when the hiccups and setbacks inevitable will come.
One Word for the Year
Although we did talk about New Year’s Resolutions last year in Episode 34, Attempting to Backwards Plan, this year we decided to take our goals for the year in a new direction and I hope you will join us.
Have you heard of the trend of choose one single word to set the tone for year? They are words like simplify, brave, shine, pause, ignite, create, or generous to name a few.
Choosing one word for the year has been gaining in popularity for a while now and I think that is because it creates some leeway. You are able to achieve your goal without daily or weekly perfection but instead, a general movement towards a more intentional year.
