I’ll admit it, I’m distracted.
You know I love sharing about organizing strategies, but lately there hasn’t been too much organizing going on around here. I’ll blame it on the move. The essentials are all unpacked and the girl’s room looks great, but the rest of the house is kind of one big DIY project.
So, in an effort to keep it real and share as I go, I thought I’d post about several mini topics. It’s kind of like a peek into my brain, easily distracted and jumping from project to project. Most of these projects don’t fall under the “organizing” category, but it’s all these little things that make a house into a home. Like these new curtains I made for the kitchen window following this tutorial.
It only cost $8 for the material plus the $20 bamboo shade behind it. I think I’ll paint that AC vent the same as the wall color to make it blend in a little more. Maybe when I get a pendent light you won’t notice the vent as much. Fingers crossed.
I tackled stripes for our bathroom.
I’d never painted stripes before, but when I was dreaming about colors for the room, I decided I’d mix it up a bit in here. I still have lots of plans for this room, including counters that don’t incorporate stacking an old wine crate to hide the opening into the vanity.
Speaking of counters, I upgraded mine.
Yup, that is contact paper on plywood. I finally admitted to myself that it is going to be a little while longer until we get those babies installed.
We were considering DIY’ing concrete counters. The hubs even did a trial run.
As much as I love concrete counters in every space I have seen them in (i.e. trendy bars and restaurants, plus a few on Pinterest like these, these and these) I nixed them for our kitchen because they just don’t feel homey to me. We did install our cabinet hardware though. It has made an huge improvement in functionality. Who knew those soft-close drawers are so hard to get into!
Since we won’t be DIY’ing counters, we’ll need to save up a bit before we can spring for real ones. As much as we would love to give the last big finishing touch to the kitchen, our current savings is baby #3 focused (darn you Dave Ramsey!).
I snagged a self-portrait because I didn’t even have any pregnant belly picture to share. Hopefully the little one will get more camera love after it arrives in late October. Btw, I had to tell myself a joke to force a smile. Otherwise, I had different awkward versions of this.
So I have 3 months to get the 3rd bedroom in working order for baby number 3! Woot!
By the way, in the pic above, did you notice the crammed with stuff hutch in the background? Here’s the close up.
It has become craft central and a drop zone for projects. There is definitely some organizing to do!
I am still working out how things will flow in this house. The messy hutch is right in the kitchen area and this is not the look I want in the kitchen. It doesn’t help that I am now desk-less. My once hold-everything desk is now empty ready to be craigslist-ed. Excuse me as I grab a tissue. I love that desk!
As much as I love it, it just doesn’t fit in this new house. Anyone in San Diego interested?
Once it sells, a new desk will be in the works which will help the “drop everything on a flat surface syndrome”. Maybe I’ll try to build one myself, like this one. I’ve been eyeing it forever but I might be getting ahead of myself. There is still a long list of projects to be done.
Good thing we are grooming them young to conquer some DIY. (We always get dressed in our Sunday’s finest first.)
Ramble much? Maybe I can blame it on the heat or the hormones or both.
Update: After writing this, I had to go back and do something about my messy hutch. I couldn’t stop looking at it. It took me all of 8 minutes to clear it off and put things away! Time for 10 Minute Tuesdays again!
I added a little box next to the hutch to drop all our tools in while in between projects. The stand mixer is only there until long-awaited counters come. Ahh, still so much better.
Are working on any summer projects or just enjoying lazy, summer days?
