Shelves are a fabulous way to make use of often unused vertical space. But if we are not careful shelves can begin to collect clutter.

I love how the shelves function as valuable storage but stay breathable. Also did you notice in last picture, there’s nail polish collected in the small vase! Talk about fun and functional.
A few ways to make your own bookshelves beautiful and functional.
- Experiment with vertical and horizontal storage of your books.
- Pick one or two of your favorite mementos to take center stage on your shelves. Use the treasured item as a book end or on top of a stack of books. Look for special items you may have previously hidden away in a drawer or boxes.
- Pare down your book collection. Choose one book to get rid of for every 5 books you keep.
Have you tried color coordinating your books? The pops of arranged color can give a strong impact. Or do you keep books arranged by theme? Does it inspire you to sneak some shelves into that previously unused corner? I know I am about reorganize a few shelves in my own home!

My daughter is only five months old but since my husband and I are avid readers she already has a huge book collection. I originally organized her books by type(board, golden, etc) but I recently reorganized them by color. Its visually really nice to look at and though I’ll probably change it before she learns her colors I can’t wait to use this to help her learn her colors.
