My long abandoned desk has undergone an organization overall. After getting way too comfortable doing my computer work in a comfy (but non-ergo friendly) armchair; I knew it was time to reclaim my desk space! The first stage of the desk overhaul is already a huge improvement.
Since it was definitely much more functional, I decided it was time to add some fun. Enter some color; first, a little bright blue to the back of the bookshelves.
Oh, it didn’t stop there. I grabbed my new bff, spray paint, to pop some color on the plain Ikea drawer box I use to hold supplies.
I am still in awe of what a little green can of spray paint can do.
With the paint drying, it was time to tackle the villain in my organizing adventures, cords. And to further the superheroes analogy, I will declare Velcro the superpower needed to combat all tangled cord woes.
I added Velcro to the back of my laptop cord to affix it to the back, underside of the cabinet.
I hate to pull the heavy cord up against gravity to extend the reach the of the laptop so the Velcro keeps the bulky cord in place while still allowing me to remove it if necessary. (Sorry for the poor picture, it was hard to get back there.)
I also used Velcro for the printer cord and power strip to free up the valuable real estate of the bottom cabinet. I chose a 3M removable hook to hang up the extension cord.
This made the bottom of the cabinet available for storing my extra binders, files and trash can.
The printer connection is also held in place by Velcro. It stays right where I need it but is almost hidden down below the desk. I told you Velcro has superpowers!
You could opt to use black Velcro if you want it to blend in with the cord. I choose white so it blends in with the desk. If you look closely at the picture below you can see the arrow pointing to the Velcro stuck to the desk.
With all the pesky cords now under control, I organized my drawers with a simple drawer organizer and labels. These are my only drawers in the desk so I was particular which desk supplies to keep close at hand. I sent half of my paperclips and staples to my husband’s office to free up some room.
With the color, cords, and office supplies now in place, I had brand new surroundings to work in!
One of my favorite parts of the desk is that side table that comes down. The little folding table gives me all the room I need to spread out, but tucks away when it is time to close up the cabinet doors.
My desk has come a long way.
The up close and personal before and after shoot is almost too hard to look at. I am embarrassed I let it get that bad.
With all the effort to get my desk back in tip-top shape, I can’t imagine it falling back into its original shape. I am a changed desk owner!
Have you found child-like joy is such things as a painted bookshelf? Any one else giving items new life with a little spray paint?
Disclaimer- I am not affiliated in any way with Velcro nor was I compensated by the parent company who owns the Velcro brand. My love for Velcro and its unending superpowers is all natural and true.

Autumn,
This looks fantastic! It would look great in my house–those are “my” colors! 😉
My favorite part of the desk is the folding side table. It’s such efficient storage for something that you only use on occasion.
Thanks for sharing this project!
