This doesn’t relate to organizing in any way, but it is part of living and I thought I would take a little break for some weekend fun.
I made my best cake ever (which really isn’t saying much) thanks to a great Christmas gift, Cakes for Kids. Thanks Mom.
This cake is not for one of my little ones, although they picked the theme. It is for my big D, Happy Birthday honey!
It started as two loaf cakes and was carved down to a truck shape. Vanilla Wafers were used as the headlights and tires.
When I was growing up my mother had a pamphlet Baker’s Coconut Cut-up Cakes that we would flip through to pick out our birthday cake each year.
I began instituting the tradition with my little ones and it has become a hit. The Cakes for Kids book is on regular reading rotation.
Here are some past cakes just for fun.
For her 4th birthday a reindeer was requested even though her birthday is in September; three months before reindeer’s typically make an appearance. Who am I to fight it?
She chose a butterfly cake again for her birthday later this month. I hope to really hone my butterfly cake skills so I can knock this next one out of the park.
Lilia already has her cake picked out for her 5th birthday, which isn’t for another 6 months. She has chosen a rainbow for the sole reason that it is decorate with M&Ms. Maybe I’ll just make a sheet cake and toss M&Ms on it. She would love it.
Any other kooky cake makers and lovers?

I think my mom must have had that same cookbook. For my 7th birthday, she made me an adorable panda bear cake. I remember she made a heart shaped cake each year for valentine's day, also. It was probably the easiest — just cook your cake batter (and hers was always from scratch) in a square pan and a round pan. Cut the round cake layer in half, and place the flat side against two adjacent sides of the square pan. In my childlike mind, that was pure genius! My cakes aren't normally so creative, although I did attempt a football cake for my son a couple of times. Thankfully, my family prefers this easy cake on birthdays: http://willowhousewelcome.blogspot.com/2010/11/make-gift-mix-triple-chocolate-cake.html

A house and a train! I need to get some tips from your mom. She's a pro!

My mom used to make me a cake in all different shapes as well. My two favs. were the house cake and the one that looked like a train.
